-Promoting the life enhancing benefits of singing is the English National Opera, who want to show that singing is for all of us... [ Vocalizing ] ...and that anyone can sing.
♪♪ ♪♪ -I'm going to tie this, excuse me, round you.
-From over 600 applicants... the ENO has chosen six wannabe singers.
-Okay, and we're just going to move them around a bit.
-And with the help of expert voice coaches... [ Vocalizing ] ...is giving them the skills and confidence to sing in front of an audience in just three months.
-It sounds like it's coming from low down, which is what makes me happy.
-What's really good about these six singers is that they have possibility.
♪ I am on top of the world ♪ -Excellent.
That was already better, wasn't it?
We're not sure what that possibility is yet, but each of them has something to work on.
[ Vocalizing ] -The singers are now halfway through their 12 week opera singing crash course.
-[ Vocalizing ] -And breathe.
-Grazie.
-Grazie.
Grazie.
-And are discovering that learning to sing is a physical business.
-You've got natural rhythm.
Yeah!
Yeah!
♪ My humble prayers I have ♪ -Their first challenge -- to perform lines from "Tosca" to each other -- proved difficult for some.
♪ I always pray sincerely ♪ -Sort of puts the pressure on 'cause you don't want to be the person who's letting this whole group down.
♪ Like this ♪ -With the first challenge behind them, it's just six weeks till their final performance on the set of "H.M.S.
Pinafore " at the Coliseum.
To prepare them, the voice coaches have come up with another challenge and have asked mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins to help them.
-We've set up this fantastic challenge for our fledgling singers.
-Two, three.
♪ God save our gracious Queen ♪ -Now it is going to be terrifying for many of them.
♪ Long live our ♪ ♪ Noble Queen ♪ -But it's a really good warm up for when we get to the Coliseum.
-You've been working on the tune for the national anthem.
You've been working on the harmonies for it, haven't you?
-Yeah.
-Which is a little bit more complicated.
You're going to be singing that live in front of an audience of millions at an NFL game coming up soon.
-[ Trills, whistles ] That doesn't seem to shock or surprise you, does it?
-You are going to be singing in front of 60,000 people at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
-The NFL football game?
-[scoffs] What?!
-God save the Queen!
-Oh, Jesus.
-The thinking behind the NFL challenge is to get them to stand in front of a lot of people that they can see and that they can't see.
-How does that make you feel?
-Horrible.
[laughs] -And just to understand what it is to put yourself in that position of singing for people.
-Rico, you look as though somebody shot you.
-I'm just thinking about everyone watching me.
-This is a challenge.
-This is definitely a challenge now.
-Yeah.
-Got butterflies already.
-So you better get warming up, luv.
-[laughing] Bloody hell.
Wow.
Okay, I wasn't expecting that at all.
♪♪ -So this is glorious.
Just out within the elements.
-It is beautiful.
Really beautiful.
-Of the six singers, it's Anglican priest Ellen who finds singing in front of other people the most difficult.
-Ellen has a very particular issue with pitch matching, which for Ellen, not being able to sing the right notes as she sees it, she felt so exposed on the "Tosca" workshop day, I think she was really, really upset that she wasn't able to show her best Ellen on that day.
But that's something we've got to work towards.
After we did the "Tosca" challenge... -Yeah.
-Can you explain to me what that was like?
-That was hard.
Um, I think for me, because it felt like the other five sounded so good.
So it felt like I was the only one who wasn't producing what was wanted and needed.
-Would you say this is one of the hardest things you've ever tried to do?
-Definitely.
Being sort of one of the first group of women to be ordained to the priesthood brings its own set of challenges... -Mm.
-...with it.
But there isn't anything that ties into my primal fears... -Mm-hm.
-...as much as doing this.
-Wow.
Well, seeing as we're here in this countryside idyll, I thought it would be a good idea to do some singing.
-Why not?
Let's do that.
-Let's do it.
Come on.
Get another cup of tea as well.
-Yes.
-Or something stronger.
-Yes.
[laughs] -Splendid.
♪♪ I do think singing is best performed in our natural habitat.
So I'm gonna have a drink.
[laughs] -Excellent.
[laughs] Sparkling wine is even better.
-Well, exactly.
Let me serve you, Madame.
-Thank you.
-So this is the recipe for Ellen Unplugged.
[ Ellen laughs ] By doing this, we are setting the scene for some fabulous singing.
I can feel it.
-Cheers.
-So now we're in our relaxed environment.
[ Ellen laughs ] ♪♪ [ Vocalizing ] -So at the moment... [ Plays note ] that's where we are.
And what do we need to change when we're here?
[ Plays note ] -We need to go down a bit.
-Yes.
So... [ Vocalizing ] Yes!
Cheers to that.
-Cheers.
[laughs] -So when we get the tone right, then we're allowed to have a little sip of this.
-[laughs] Okay.
[ Vocalizing ] -On you go, then, darling.
I can't play when I'm drinking.

So we've found it at the end.

Well done.
Learning how to sing is hard work.
And if you can make the hard work a bit more fun, then it's definitely something we should embrace.
Okay, so we've discovered, Ellen, haven't we, that if we get our earnest the snail... -Sometimes.
-...involved, it helps us get out of our heads.
-Sometimes.
-Sometimes.
So I'm going to play a note... -Okay.
-And you're going to sing.
-Okay.

Let's have a look at "Anyone Can Whistle."

It was a very relaxed afternoon Singing.
It was super.
Yeah.
♪ Easy ♪ -One of the things I've learned to do is know when I am singing the wrong note.
Not necessarily good at getting to the right note, but good at knowing when it isn't the right note, which is progress.
♪ So someone tell me why can't I ♪ -I'm not saying that we should have glasses of fizz at every lesson, because that's not conducive to great work -- he says.
-♪ Lower my guard ♪ -Yes!
♪ Learn to be free ♪ -But I think actually we've seen some progress today.
♪ Whistle for me ♪ -Yes!
She doesn't want to come off the note!
♪♪ ♪ Looking in your eyes I see a paradise ♪ ♪ This world that I've found ♪ -To help the singer's confidence in the run-up to the NFL game, they're working on personal projects with their coaches, milestones on their singing journey.
♪ That I'm feeling for you ♪ -The purpose of the milestones is to just give them a measure of where they are at that point.
So they've started with not being able to sing or being told that they can't sing.
They don't necessarily understand that they're growing.
It also gives the singer a sense of courage, a sense of accomplishment.
That's the point of it.
♪ And we can build this dream together ♪ ♪ Standing strong forever ♪ ♪ Nothing's gonna stop us ♪ -For entrepreneur Luke, his personal milestone is to sing to his fiancée, George.
ENO music supervisor Murray Hipkin is helping him prepare.
♪ Nothing's gonna stop us now ♪ [ Whistles ] -You don't need those words.
-I don't.
It's like a comfort thing.
-Put it down.
Put it down.
-Right.
-So, look, I'd really like to know why that song's special to you.
-So this is actually one of my [whistles] favorite songs, but it's also one of George's favorite songs, and I've lost count of how many times we've listened to this together.
It's one of those like standard on every playlist for mine.
It's been years since I've had a conversation with George [whistles] without tics interrupting or whatever, and I want to... [trills, whistles] I want to sing to him about like how I feel, [whistles] because I don't tic at all when I sing, and I want him to kind of get that message.
-We've got something lined up for you... -Mm-hm.
-...that's gonna help you sing to George in the way that you've just said you wanted to do.
-Mm-hm.
-Erm, how would you feel if I brought along 40 of my friends to be your backing group?
-Oh my God!
[laughs] -Erm... -So I work with the Pink Singers, which is Europe's longest running LGBT+ choir.
-[chuckles] I'm so sorry.
I think it's been such a struggle lately, [whistles] and I haven't been myself and -- Without George, I can probably honestly say I wouldn't be -- I definitely wouldn't be doing this process, but I don't even know if I'd be here overall.
I know he's gonna love it, and I know how special it's going to be.
[ Laughs, sniffles ] Thank you.
[laughs] -Good.

We're looking forward to it.
-Oh, Jesus Christ.
[ Sniffles ] ♪♪ -There's just days to go 'til the singers perform the national anthem in four part harmony at the NFL game.
♪♪ At the Royal Northern College of Music, voice coach Michael is running through the alto line with Khadijah.
♪ Send her victorious ♪ -Singing in harmony requires a different skill set.
It requires you to sing your part while someone else is singing a different part, and the other person might be singing the tune, which we all want to gravitate to.
♪ Save the Queen ♪ So you've got to really stay in your focus... [ Vocalizing ] and not do that.
That's really hard if you've never done it before.
It's going to be tough.
♪ The Queen ♪ -Well done, Shirley.
I don't think everyone else has heard your tenor voice yet.
[ Both laugh ] ♪ God save the Queen ♪ -I learnt the words.
[laughs] -Yay!

Yay.
-Now, there are a couple of things that you could work on to stay in your body.
-Mm-hm.
-Okay, so just imagine you're pulling that bow and you can't let the bow go... -Okay.
-...'cause sometimes when you're singing, you go -- ♪ Send her ♪ And I want you -- do you know what I'm saying?
-Mm-hm.
-Feel that bow and keep it pulled, okay?
-Okay.
And you want me to stay like this?
-That's right.
Keep your singing in the bow pull.

-To help Ellen tackle the harmonies with confidence, Nicky has asked Chris to come and practice with her.
-We're bringing Chris here as a delightful, but... -I'm not scary.
-...pressurized presence... just so we're just increasing the amount of people that you're singing to bit by bit.
-So if we do it one by one 'til we build up to the thousandth, that'll be fine.
-Yeah, yeah.
-Yes, exactly.
How long have we got?
-Day by day.
-Singing in harmony can be a complete mind bender.
But you stick with your line.
And it can be terrifying, 'cause you think, well, I've lost it.
And there's strength in numbers, but you have to just really stick to your guns to create this lovely chord effect.
Now, shall we have a little sing through this national anthem?
-Woo-hoo.
-Woo-hoo.
-Let's give it a whirl.
If you're doing it, especially under pressure, it could all fall apart.
-Okay, yeah.

-[ Laughter ] -I haven't started the song yet, so I -- Start again.

♪ Send her victorious ♪ -And it would be scary to be standing there talking to however many thousands of people, but standing there and singing to them, that's a whole different level.

-Yeah, I think we're all going to be pretty daunted and pretty glad to have each other there.
-It's very nice!
-Now I managed to hit the notes.
-It's like Sonny and Cher!

Each is designed to help them sing live and under pressure.
-So you loved the "Tosca."
You loved the idea of being on stage.
-Yeah, performing.
[laughs] -Could you imagine you and I singing something together?
-That would be amazing.
-You see, I start rehearsing at ENO tomorrow, and what we thought would be nice is that you and I sing to the other professional singers.
-Me?
-Yeah, you and me.
-But me singing to other professionals?
-Yes.
You and me doing a little duet.
-Alright.
Sure.
They're in for a laugh.

We're about to work on a duet, which will be fascinating because he'll be stood next to me singing, and I'm -- What I'm hoping is that he begins to build some confidence and that he enjoys the sense of performing and releasing his voice.

-For Chris's milestone, Nicky and Murray have brought him to London's South Bank.
-I really want to put Chris out of his comfort zone.
He's so happy when it's just me and him larking around and singing.
I want him to stand in front of people that he doesn't know.
Nobody will have seen him singing solo on the street, and that can be cringe-worthy at the best of times.
And if he can get through that, then I think that is another important journey for him to be able to sing at the Coliseum.
-So we're outside the Tate Modern, right in front of the river, and I'm about to sing in public for the first time [laughs] ever.
There's a few friends come down.
My wife and my daughter.
And hopefully they're going to be surprised.
I feel confident about the song.
I know the song.
I can sing it, but, like -- it's just that sudden thought of just going off, going, "Oh my God, people!"
[laughs] And going off track.
-So here we are on the precipice of your big moment, Chris.
-Yes.
-Obviously, 'cause you're outside, we're gonna have to use your big boy voice.
-Mm-hm, mm-hm.
-Imagine that your noise has got to hit the trees.
-Yeah.
-And then I think you'll be absolutely... -Yeah.
-Absolutely fine.
-Okay?
-Cool.

-Right.
I've never sung in public ever before.
This is the first time.
I've been learning to sing with this wonderful man, Nicky here.
I'm gonna give it a go and I'm going to sing "Impossible Dream" for you.

It was wonderful to watch him.

It was a really quite a powerful feeling.

[ Vocalizing ] -Singing is a nerve wracking experience at the best of times when you're sat in your own bathroom, let alone when you're singing in front of a huge audience.
♪ O God makes me ♪ -You are offering up a very personal part of yourself.
[ Vocalizing ] -It's so nerve wracking to know that's what I sound like.
Oh my goodness.
So it's going to be very scary for our fledgling singers doing this for the first time.
-To help Rico prepare for singing in front of an audience of thousands at the NFL game, he's been working on a duet with Coach Sarah.
They're about to perform for the cast of Sarah's latest show.
[ Singing in global language ] -I'm rehearsing at ENO in a very amazing opera called "Satyagraha," by Philip Glass and Rico is going to watch me sing, and then I'm going to invite him to join me on the stage and sing a duet with me in front of everybody in the cast.
He knows that the standard of people that he's singing in front of have sung all around the world.
So it's the most extraordinary thing to ask him to do.
[ Singing in global language ] -Today I'm doing my duet with Sarah.
Really looking forward to it.
Erm, I think I'm a bit nervous about working with a professional like Sarah and having her peers look at me, so hopefully I can just master it and do her proud and do myself proud.
[ Singing in global language ] -So, everybody, this is lovely, lovely Rico.
We've worked for six weeks, and had you sung at all before?
-Never.
-Imagine that you had never sung a note.
Nothing.
And then suddenly I've dragged you in here to sing.
-Forced.
She forced me in here.
-Forced.

-Forced.
And what we're going to sing is "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better."

I can't believe the change in me.
I can see it in myself, and I'm just happy that I'm just able to express myself and be more free.

On game day, they will be performing with Welsh classical singer Katherine Jenkins.
They just don't know that yet.
[ Gasps ] -Hi.

-They are going to be mentored for that day by Katherine Jenkins, who is not daunted by seeing a huge sea of people in front of her.
So she is absolutely the right person to help them be able to think, "I am going to perform to that person right at the back."
-It's so nice to meet you and thanks for agreeing to sing with me.
-Thanks for agreeing to sing with us.
-Yeah, you haven't heard us yet.
-I've been so looking forward to it.
I just want this to be really fun for you.
I want you to not be kind of overwhelmed by the thing.
Let's view it as we're all singing together, you know?
-Do you feel nervous before performances, or has that gone now?
-As a rule, no.
A little bit of nerves, kind of get the adrenaline going.
I think the most important thing to remember is that everybody here wants you to succeed.
They want to sing the anthem with us.
Everybody's behind you.
-Perfect.
I can't wait.

-[ Laughter ] -Yeah, let's get started.
[ Laughter ] -Sadly, Chris has tested positive for COVID and is missing not just the rehearsal, but the big day, too.
-Yeah, well, I want to hear some of your warm ups.
-Oh, no you don't.
-[ Laughter ] -I do want to hear your warm up.
-Katherine Jenkins, she doesn't sing lots of opera, but she's a classical singer that knows how to use a microphone, that knows how to sing to every single person in that audience.
And she has this natural charisma, which I think will work really well with our singers.
-This is actually pretty good that we can do a little warm up and rehearsal.
There are some people, you know, buzzing around, so let's use that as kind of a little practice for the distractions that are going to be here when we actually do it.
So let's do a little -- [ Luke trills, whistles ] [Trills] Okay.
[ Trilling ] Can you do a little roll of the tongue.
Have you... [ Trilling ] [ Trilling ] -Very good.
-Rolling tongue is not my forte.
-Okay.
Don't worry.
You can -- you can hum if you want to.
You can do -- [hums] if you would prefer.
[ Trilling, humming ] -I want to compliment you on your posture.
Like, I can see you're already thinking about exactly where you need to stand and how to hold -- This is really, really great.
So we're going to be facing this way.
And what I want you to do is to imagine that you're singing to the person in the very top at the back row.
Okay?
-Hi.
-That person up there, I want you to choose a seat that you're going to sing to.
And I want you to imagine there's a string -- -Column.
-Yeah, the column.
Exactly.
There's a string holding you up.
Energetically, that's where you're singing to.
Now, I'm going to throw a spanner in the works here.
For something like this, we do actually need to use microphones.
You haven't done anything with microphones yet, have you?
Okay.
Anybody have a hairbrush?
-No.
I've got a water bottle.
-Can you use something?

-Okay, so using mics, you know, it's just another thing for you to think about.

There's an extra thing that we have to think about, right?
So when we get here, we root ourselves.
We find our spot to look at.
We keep the mic in the same spot, and we look like we're happy to be here.
Okay?
And those are the main four things I want us to think about.
It was so lovely meeting the singers.
I think they've done really amazing work so far.
Obviously, they're going to be nervous walking into such a brand new and quite daunting setting.
But they took on what I said really well and I'm just really excited to perform with them.
I think it's going to be a big achievement for them.
And the main thing for me is that they have fun with it.
♪♪ -With the NFL rehearsal under his belt, Luke is realizing his dream of singing to fiancée George.
-So George proposed to me and I ticked before I gave him a response.
So I kind of want to redo the proposal.
So after I sing for him, I've got him a ring and I'm going to propose to him.
♪♪ -Luke is being supported by music supervisor Murray and LGBTQ choir The Pink Singers.
♪♪ -How are you feeling?
-Nervous.
[laughs] -What are you nervous about, especially?
-I've never sang in front of George properly before, but like, I know that was the whole goal for it.
But now it's, like, happening, I'm like, oh... I don't want it to just sound like I still can't sing.
[laughs] -You can sing.
Just remember that it's your voice that we want to hear.
-Yeah.
So George thinks we're going on a date night, so he has absolutely no idea.
-That's really funny.
I can't wait to see his face.
I'm really looking forward to it.
-Me too.
-Singing to George might be really difficult because emotion is involved.
And when you're a singer, I tell my students all the time, your dog might have just died.
The audience does not care.
They just want a good performance.
So you've just got to channel it through and sing.
So I think he's going to have to find techniques to ground himself.
That's his biggest issue.
-[laughing] Hello.

-Right.
-Here.
-Take a seat.
-Okay.
-Okay, so I've been working on a little something.
-Mm-hm.
-But this is for you.
-Okay.

[ Cheers and applause ] -Tonight I thought I was just coming to meet Luke at the end of a rehearsal, and then just totally overwhelmed with emotion when I sat down and he started singing.
It was amazing.
Can't believe that he did it.
[ Applause continues ] -I love you.
-I love you more.
I love you more.
-When I first started singing and I could see George that got so emotional then and I, like, had to just remind myself, like, right, sing first, emotion after.
-Are you okay?
-Yeah.
I bet I look an absolute state.
-Yep.
[laughs] -But I think this goes back to what Michael was saying about singing that you have to feel the words behind the lyrics.
You have to [whistles] open up and, like, let those feelings in.
So [whistles] once again, Michael was right.
[laughs] ♪♪ -American football has come to London.
60,000 people will be watching the game live and millions more on TV.
And the singers will be standing center stage performing the national anthem in four part harmony.
-What's good about the NFL challenge is that it prepares them for what it feels like, the exhilarating feeling of being in front of a big crowd, more than that's going to be at the English National Opera.
-Our aspiring singers have only been training their voices for six weeks, and today they face a challenge that would be tough for even a seasoned professional.
-I'm so scared I'm going to faint or throw up.
-Well, if you throw up, I'll just throw up as well.
Just so you're not alone.
-Thank you.
Yeah.
-If people throw up, it triggers me And then I'll probably throw up anyway.
-That's three of us, then.
-Okay, great.
-So that's fine.
-What is fantastic for the singers is to feel what it feels like to sing in a group and face a huge audience.
They will have this fantastic sense of singing and communicating together.
And that's what an opera singer is.
An opera singer is a communicator.
-Do you know what, we should be able to have a champagne after this.
-Yeah, definitely.
-Yeah.
-The group are accompanying classical star Katherine Jenkins, along with ENO's Harewood Young Artists.
Chris is still isolating with COVID, so music supervisor Murray is standing in.
-Just enjoy yourself.
-Now, this is going to be terrifying for many of them, but it's an opportunity for them to try and have some kind of connection with a greater public.
How do you export your charisma to such a big space?
And I think that if they can get through that, then they can do anything with their singing.
-I am genuinely, absolutely buzzing to sing.
Like, I cannot wait.
Like I want to just go out and do it.
-Everyone's out there now.
It's just a great atmosphere right now.
It's just electric.
-I think while I'm doing it, I'll be a nervous wreck, but once it's done, it'll probably feel like liberating.
-When I'm walking down there, I'm hoping just to be enjoying this once-in-a-lifetime thing for what it is.
-It's just amazing to be part of this.
So this is one of my tick, done in life.

I'm really proud of myself.
I wasn't thinking about anything other than look up.
I'm just going to keep looking up, and I'm gonna just sing it and get through it.
And then, yeah, it was just really good.
-That was such a high.
It was wonderful.
It was such a buzz being out there.
I feel like I could go back and do the winning touchdown now.
Nothing's impossible.
-I want it again!
[laughs] I want to relive it.
It was fantastic.

-We have to get Catherine's number so we can do it all the time with her.
[ Laughter ] it's like a dream, to be honest.
Like you think about it.
We're just people, ordinary people, who sang in front of all these people and the people at home.
-I wouldn't ever think I'd ever do anything even remotely like this.
Like before, I wouldn't have even gone to watch something in a stadium, because I wouldn't want to be around that many people.
And now I've just stood directly in the middle and sang, so... [ Laughs ] -Yay!
-We all done it as a team and we should all be proud of ourselves, like.
-Yeah.
-I can't imagine being out there without all of you lot being out there too.
-Yeah.

♪♪ -So the grand finale challenge for our singers is to go to the London Coliseum and sing to almost two and a half thousand people.
-They're having so much information given to them.
How are they going to do that in this short time?
-My brain is kind of a bit scrambled.
-I do actually feel a bit sick now.
