Being part of Inland Sessions in particular, was a milestone for me as a poet and as an artist and as a leader in my community.
Knowing that often times you have to be at a venue in order to see things.
Having a platform that can reach you no matter where you're at is beautiful, you know.
Being able to, you know, turn on your television and knowing that, hey, this is a guaranteed thing.
You know, I don't have to have, you know, cable network.
I don't have to, you know, have the best of the best in order to be able to see this experience.
I don't have to drive out of my way.
I can have limitations and still be entertained and be influenced is a reason why I think local programs such as this are important.
I'm riding down the highway, got the sun at my back.
I don't know where I'm going.
I only know where I'm at.
If you're standing in a circle.
You wanna see the other side.
Oh!
You don't need no navigator.
Just get out there and ride.
I'm riding alone.
I'm riding alone.
Yeah!
I'm riding alone.
Still riding alone.
Hand me down!
She got eyes like a city at night.
Make you feel sad, make you feel all right.
Well sometimes I know she just don't care.
Depending upon which way she wears her hair.
But I ain't going back there.
No.
Maybe I'm gone, but I'm going nowhere.
There ain't no sense in lying still.
Don't the valley seem so sweet?
When you're watching from the top of the hill.
I won't ask more than you are able Tonight lets terry at the table And dream until the night grows young Let every song be sung and known All the love I have The atlas and the photographs All the days I live Where I go and where I've been.
All the words I own.
Home and harbor All the love I have is yours Oooh, I dont know why but I just can't sleep Living a lie outside my dreams I don't know why, but I just can't sleep Living a lie outside my dreams I dont know why, but I just cant sleep Living a lie outside my dreams I dont know why, but I just can't sleep I don't know why I don't know why Dream again Dream again My name is Olivia Brownlee, and I write songs.
So, one of the things that was really awesome to me, getting to work with a television station, which I'd never done before that, uh, was realizing that we have kind of a similar job.
We're here to amplify the message of the people that we're around a lot.
Having public media and broadcasting available to us to be like, hey, we're here for you.
[Laughs.]
We're here to try to connect you more.
You guys have a superpower.
You're the powerful force that amplifies what people are doing and where you can find them, where we can find each other.
You make it possible for local stories to be heard by local people.
And I'm grateful for, you know, stuff like this that makes it possible for people to know.
And no one embodies that wonderful soul Nobody for me has got more clout than a Ruby.
My Ruby.
If you're dubious, I tell you truly.
She's groovy.
She's moody.
Such a cutie.
It's my duty to shout.
Hey!
Hey, Ruby.
Fancy pants Ruby!
You got leg room, Ruby.
Waiting in the atrium.
Dancing like a sugar plum.
Hey.
Hey, Ruby.
And I'll thank you to meet me there at Square River, no Park River, no Meet me down at Riverpark Square Well, I cried and I cried in the morning sun I'm walking down the road Had a long, long night sleeping on the floor And I wanted to get home Feeling sorry for myself Pitiful and frail The morning after they led me out of the Hennepin County Jail I felt a presence by my side A gentleman was there He said, I just want to check on you.
I don't mean to scare I said, I'm a rotten human being because I've been doing time The gentleman wiped my tears, and then he said, so kind I don't care why they locked you up I don't care what youve done If youre going the way I am, you can walk with someone Cheer up, honey, it's a beautiful day You don't have to go far This sun is gonna shine on you no matter how bad you are And although the day is still brand new, I'm wondering how I'm gonna make it through Without taking a break from trying to play it cool But you don't always have to look on the bright side, the bright side, the bright side And not every cloud is gonna be silver lined You don't have to be fine If there's no bright side I think it's your obligation to support anything that is local.
Just as much as you would support your local businesses, you should feel obligated to support your local artists.
Uh, I think we all have ambitions and desires, and those things become stagnant when they're not fueled properly.
You know, I feel like you can never look at a child and tell them, you know, not to pursue their dream.
Um, you know, because you limit possibility.
Ah, I feel like things need to be unlimited and when we have programs like this, it shows generations what they can do.
One night, street lights came on, casting a spotlight on our adolescence.
No one called us home, and we were left in adulthood, running from our days bound to account to darkness, mouths full of past regrets like childhood cavities, chasing sweet dreams can make it painful to smile Wipe yourself off Like scraped knees when chasing dreams The ice cream that fell from your hands into reality rides with dirt on your shoulders and carry the earth The sun rises as we move to the sound of our own tune Now behind our drive a new generation of youth pursue Let them pick our open minds Laid out like ice cream menus Advise them they keep chasing dreams long after adolescence meets its last moon Because a childhood had a theme song and it came from my speaker, it would be a heart pulsing through neighborhoods, reminding society that you are still alive Young souls running together evokes unity Their souls pounding on concrete throbs my heart's beat and I will stop my drive In order to become a provider of dreams, even if it's only ice cream.
Got my music and my window down low.
Listening real close to the Holy Ghost Caught up in the moment Got me frozen I am petrified Cause one day I know, I'll be coming back home Man, lets have fun Hey, please call me Summer Solution This ain't a movement.
This is a movie.
I just be cruising to the conclusion.
Wait.
[Sorry the ending is ruined] Oh, well!
Still got them on my coat tails Been a long while since your boy had no mail Inbox on wholesale I got what you need, if you're brand needs a propel Cocky or confident?
Debating, I'm not really fond of it, mmm but I'm kind of lit, so I need a holiday and a big monument Dominance If you come to my face, you must face every consequence It's obvious, my mamas proud of this Don't like who doubted this [Spicy] Thank you so much for tuning in tonight.
We have one request for you for the evening, and it's that you would not come and funk up the vibe.]
Please don't come funking up the vibe Hey!
Oh, no, no funking up the vibe Yeah!
A swish!
Woop!
My name is T.S The Solution.
I'm a hip hop artist, audio engineer, out in Spokane, Washington.
I'm also the operations manager at Spokane Arts.
We handle all the public art in the city, and we work closely with City Council and the mayor's office to make Spokane a thriving arts scene.
Uh, being on Inland Session impacted me as an artist, heavily.
It gave me a sense of community, something that Ive almost feel like I miss a lot because I'm not from here.
I didn't go to high school here.
Um, so to have a name like KSPS PBS reach out and want to have me be a part of Inland Sessions, uh, felt amazing to me.
I felt honored.
I felt welcomed.
Some things that, you knoe, not a lot of people feel when they come to a new city as an adult.
Um, but I got to come here and I felt embraced.
And um, as an artist, it gave me an understanding of my responsibility to the community.
Your footprints carved by boots that walk alone Fingers grip against the suitcase that you hold That tightly aips around what you cant let go Bridge tracks speed past sparkling dreams Like rapids crash against while you speed fast You only skim the surface of love which perches like white dove wings on a blue sloped plain Aged pines wave friendly greetings stretching brittle arms Inviting you to rest your head where the soft moss carpet cradles firm roots I think anytime you have a program that's going to help you reach a wider audience, knowing that we're so limited as beings in our day to day life, having something like this where you can stay local and still reach a wider audience, is impactful.
And knowing that we could reach, you know, smaller towns and other areas that, you know, may not have a poetry scene, may not have a music scene, but, you know, they aspire to create one in their area, uh it's beautiful and it's made possible because of programs like Inland Sessions and like networks, just like KSPS.
Hey!
I know this is a shock Its too bad you got to leave Because when your arms go round my neck They're so tight I can't breathe This game you're running, honey, Aint one I want to play Cuz I still love you, baby But you got to go away Absence makes the heart grow fond Let's see if that's the case I don't care where you go Just get out of my space Just for future reference Let me tell you where this went south How can I kiss your lips when you wont shut your mouth?
It used to be washed up Silverados, Now its all Range Rovers and Tahoes, Used to be a country mile, Now its miles of houses going up and down It used to feel safe to wander ‘round, you could go to sleep and not hear a sound Except the peace and quiet that you chased and found Things change, it feels strange I guess thats life now Living in a big small town I miss my small town You have to humanize the network.
I don't want to support the name.
I don't want to support the logo.
I want to support the message and the people behind it.
I think that's the most important part of it.
If it's a dollar, if it's $5, if it's any of these amounts, any of it, a penny, all of it goes to support what you want to see in the future.
What do you want your air to represent?
Supporting this is just as, is the same as, as ah, as paying your local taxes.
It's the same as voting for your elected officials.
It's the, it's the same as supporting small businesses in your community.
This is, this is your story in your city.
This is the culture in your city.
Um, what do you want it to represent?
What side of history do you want to be on?
And KSPS PBS has given you the opportunity to be a part of that, not just to sit back and watch on your TV, but to actually be a part in history.
